Jennifer Davis Fund for the Future

Jennifer Davis inspired, led and connected campaigns in South and Southern Africa, as well as the U.S., to combat colonial rule, bring apartheid to its knees, and give birth to South Africa’s democracy. Her leadership of the American Committee on Africa for 19 years played a key role in establishing comprehensive sanctions against apartheid South Africa, and moving communities around the U.S. to keep the pressure on until Nelson Mandela was elected president. In 2003, she joined Shared Interest’s Board of Directors, where she served until she transitioned to its Board of Advisors in April 2019, helping to build the organization’s ongoing work to empower economically marginalized communities of color in South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique and Malawi. She died at the age of 85 on October 15, 2019. Click here for Jennifer Davis' full biography.

Jennifer has left us a legacy of vision and wisdom, determination and courage. She always remained focused on the impact of our work on South and Southern Africans excluded because of their race, gender and economic status. She recognized that the end of colonial and apartheid rule was only the first step on the region’s long journey to justice – and that we in the U.S. have a “shared interest” in that journey.

In her memory, Shared Interest has established the Jennifer Davis Fund for the Future – Working for economic, racial and environmental justice in Southern Africa. The fund will help expand and deepen Shared Interest’s work on the ground for years to come to empower new communities, associations and cooperatives in Southern Africa. Tax-deductible contributions to this fund can be made directly to Shared Interest, 121 W. 27th Street, Suite 805, New York, NY 10001.
